Block Editor 101: Getting Started with the WordPress Block Editor

Learning how to use the block editor is essential if you are using WordPress for your website.

Recently, we hosted a webinar called Blog Editor 101. Alfredo Navas, Senior Front-End Engineer at Web Dev Studios, led this session and shared his in-depth knowledge with the attendees.

The webinar focused on the WordPress Block Editor and its major impact on web development today.

Introduction to the Block Editor

Before the block editor, WordPress had a classic editor that was similar to traditional word processors and limited in terms of design flexibility. The launch of the block editor with WordPress 5.0 was a major change. It completely transformed the way content is created and managed.

Alfredo Navas explained how the editor uses a block-based system, where each piece of content, such as text, images or videos, constitutes its own block. This method facilitates content management and allows for greater control and flexibility in design directly within the editor.

Detailed demonstration of the use of blocks

Alfredo also demonstrated practical features such as Navigation blocks. This allows users to create and manage website menus visually without the need for coding. He showed how these blocks can be customized and adjusted for different screen sizes.

He then explained how users can directly change styles such as text color, background, and font size from the editor interfacethus eliminating the need for custom code or plugins.

Template Elements: Understanding Templates and Patterns for Theme Developers

The webinar also covered more advanced topics such as using model parts and a model library.

Alfredo describes Model parts as reusable design elements that help maintain consistency across a website. For example, if you design a header that you want to appear on every page, you would create it as a template element.

On the other hand, patterns In the Block Editor, you’ll find pre-made layouts or blocks that you can insert into your posts and pages. They’re meant to be used as is or customized on a case-by-case basis.

Component patterns provide structural consistency and efficiency for overall elements, while templates provide creative flexibility and convenience for specific content layouts. Both are powerful tools for streamlining site design and improving user experience.

Advanced Features and Customization

Font Management

Font management was another key topic of the webinar. Alfredo explained how custom fonts can be added directly through the block editor.

Uploading new fonts usually involves adding them to your theme’s resources and enqueuing them in the theme’s functions file. Once this is done, these fonts appear in your editor’s list of font options.

Create Responsive Layouts

Alfredo also shared tips for making your site mobile-friendly using navigation blocks and style tweaks.

With the Block Editor, you can change things like font size, spacing, and how images are arranged to look best on mobile screens.

You make these changes through simple settings in each block, allowing you to immediately see and adjust how your content looks on different devices.

Using the Template Library

Using a Template Library can make your design process much easier, especially when you’re creating and updating websites.

A template library is a collection of user interface design elements. As your website grows, you need to make sure you have a consistent user interface that keeps you from getting overwhelmed.

Having a consistent template library that everyone uses also makes maintenance easier. When everyone uses the same coding standards for elements, it’s much easier for a developer to work on someone else’s code.

Wrap

This webinar provided important tips on how to effectively use modern web development tools. It was especially useful for those looking to improve their skills with the WordPress Block Editor, providing in-depth insights from an industry expert.

As more and more parts of the WordPress admin use blocks, it becomes increasingly important to become familiar with the block editor.
